Cold Bay is remote — 634 air miles from Anchorage — but far more accessible than most Alaska Peninsula destinations, thanks to a 10,180-foot paved runway that dates to WWII. Scheduled flights land year-round. From there, bush planes, boats, and 4×4 vehicles fan out into the wilderness.
Ravn Alaska operates scheduled service between Anchorage and Cold Bay (CDB) multiple times per week, with connections onward to King Cove, Sand Point, and Dutch Harbor. Alaska Airlines occasionally serves the route as well. Book early — flights fill fast during hunting seasons.
The 10,180-ft runway makes CDB one of the longest in Alaska and a designated emergency divert for transpacific flights. The terminal is modest — no restaurants, no gate agents in the traditional sense. Meet your outfitter or lodge shuttle in the parking area.
From Cold Bay, small charter operators fly you into remote hunting and fishing camps, refuge landing strips, and neighboring villages. Boat operators run charters into Izembek Lagoon and the outer Pacific.
Summer (June–August) for fishing, wildlife viewing, and the best weather. September–October for waterfowl migration, silver salmon, and fall bear hunts. May for spring bears. Winter travel is possible but weather-dependent.
Cold Bay demands serious gear regardless of season. Waterproof shell, insulating midlayers, waterproof knee-high boots (Xtratufs are standard), gloves, warm hat, sunglasses, and rain pants. Bring twice the film or memory cards you think you need — you'll use them.
The Cold Bay Clinic provides basic medical care. Serious cases are medevac'd to Anchorage. Cell service is limited; satellite communication is recommended for backcountry travel. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak covers SAR for the region.
