Fall migration on Izembek is one of the great photographic subjects in North America. Golden hour light, huge flocks, brown bears in coastal grass, caribou on volcanic ridges. Cold Bay Safaris runs guided photo trips with blinds and boats.
Open tundra means you can walk almost anywhere. Popular routes include Grant Point, the shoreline of Izembek Lagoon, and the lower flanks of Frosty Peak. Waterproof boots and layered rain gear are mandatory.
Sea kayakers explore Cold Bay itself and, weather permitting, the outer edges of Izembek Lagoon. Powerboat charters open up the rest of the refuge and the Bering Sea coast.
A handful of gravel roads radiate out from town. A rental 4×4 gets you to refuge overlooks and beach access; ATVs open up more remote track and beachcombing routes.
