Homer and Seward get the halibut headlines, but the water off Cold Bay holds fish just as big — and you'll often have the drop to yourself. Deep, cold, tide-swept water in Cold Bay itself and out toward Deer Passage produces halibut that regularly break 100 pounds, plus Pacific cod, ling cod, and a mix of rockfish on the same trip.

When to go
The saltwater season runs from June through September, with the most reliable weather windows in July and early August. Halibut are catchable all summer; the best average size tends to come mid-season when fish are stacked on structure at 200 to 400 feet.

Where boats fish
Charter captains work Cold Bay itself in bad-weather days, then push out to Deer Passage, King Cove approaches, and the outer coast when conditions allow. Ling cod and rockfish come from structure along the outer edges; halibut sit on flat gravel and mud shelves at classic tide-swept depths.

Tackle and rigs
Charters supply gear. If you bring your own: a stout 6-foot boat rod, a two-speed reel spooled with 80-lb braid, and a spread of circle hooks with herring, salmon heads, or big jigs. Bring your own rain gear and rubber boots — the deck is wet by definition.

Booking a charter
Charter capacity is small — often one or two boats operating out of Cold Bay's harbor at a time. Book weeks in advance in July and August, ask about their weather-cancellation policy, and confirm whether they fillet and vacuum-pack your catch (most do). Alaska Air Cargo can ship frozen fish home from CDB.

Regulations
All non-residents 18+ need an Alaska sport fishing license. Halibut regulations (size and daily bag) are set annually by the International Pacific Halibut Commission and can change — verify current rules with your captain before you fish, and again the morning of the trip.
