For a serious waterfowler, Cold Bay is the destination. The same eelgrass lagoons that stage the Pacific black brant migration draw a mix of sea ducks and geese you cannot legally hunt anywhere else in the United States. Emperor geese, king eiders, Steller's eiders (protected — look, don't shoot), harlequins, oldsquaw, and the black brant themselves all pass through here.

What you can hunt
Under Alaska regulations, Cold Bay hunters can pursue Pacific black brant, emperor goose (limited permit / season), harlequin, oldsquaw (long-tailed duck), king and common eider, scoters, buffleheads, and a range of dabbling ducks in freshwater ponds. Steller's eider is protected and must not be shot — learn the ID cold before you hunt.

Season and timing
General waterfowl season on the Alaska Peninsula runs from early October through mid-January, with the best sea-duck and brant hunting concentrated in October and early November before serious weather sets in. Check current Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations every year — species-specific seasons and bag limits change.

Guided or DIY
This is not a DIY destination for most hunters. Boats, blinds, decoys, tides, and knowledge of which lagoon corners hold birds on any given wind — plus safety in a place where a swamped skiff can kill you — make a guided hunt with a local outfitter the right call. Gear that matters
A 12-gauge 3-inch or 3.5-inch shotgun with steel or bismuth loads, chest waders rated for cold saltwater, a genuinely waterproof shell (not water-resistant), insulated gloves you can shoot in, and a headlamp with fresh batteries. Bring more shells than you think you need — resupply is a flight away.

Ethics and conservation
The Izembek complex is one of the world's most important waterfowl habitats. Follow all refuge boundary rules, take only clean shots at correctly identified birds, and pack out every hull and wad. The future of hunting here depends on the health of these lagoons — treat them accordingly.
